A Stelvio Showdown

An Italian version of the 1956 Tour de France’s Roger Walkowiak, little known Fausto Bertoglio fought “tooth and nail” to hold his race lead to the end. Bertoglio took the Giro lead on stage 14’s mountain time trial. He and his Jollyceramica teammates controlled the race until the unusual final stage finishing on the climb of the Passo del Stelvio

The challenge of the final stage was huge. Second placed Spanish climber Francisco Galdos trialed Bertoglio by 41” as the final climb began. Galdos attacked but Bertoglio answered every time. Galdos won the stage with a stubborn race leader second in the same time. Bertoglio retained the Maglia Rosa.

Fausto Bertoglio survived every challenge and gained the biggest victory of his career with the 1975 Giro d’Italia victory!
